The things that I did not know about Turkey:
that ½ of İstanbul is in Europe and ½ is in Asia, the halves being divided by the Bosphorus
that İstanbul is more like Europe and less like Egypt with regard to infrastructure
that İstanbul is more like Europe and less like Egypt and Romania in that we could use credit card almost everywhere
that Turkey has landscapes rarely found in other countries, such as the travertine pools in Pammukale, and the fairy chimnies and underground cities in Cappadocia
that many ancient archaeological sites, such as Troy, Pergamum, and Ephesus, are in Turkey and not in Greece
that the Greek and Turkish islands are so geographically close
that long bus trips in Turkey can almost be as comfortable as long train trips in Europe
that Turkey is less strictly Muslim than the UAE or Egypt
that more English is spoken in Turkey than in Romania
that çay (tea) is in yummily satisfying flavours such as oralet (orange), limon çay (lemon), and elma çay (apple)
that we would become stars with all ages of school groups who were thrilled to practice their English with us
